This is a real client and he was no dummy. When I started working with him, he already knew a lot about branding and marketing but he didn’t have time to keep hiring and firing agencies. 

He was burning money, and more importantly, wasting time. 

In our very first meeting, he realized that by measuring his CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) he was missing the forest for the trees.

I know what you’re thinking.

I’ve built and sold two of my own companies with that mindset… and one of them was a digital marketing agency! That attitude worked in the early 2000s, but it doesn't work anymore.

Why are my ads not performing as well as they used to?

Like I said before, agencies aren’t moving quickly enough. 

It’s worse than that though. 

They will never be able to move quickly enough ever again. The agency business model requires that they spend as little time as possible on your account so they can keep their price low enough for you not to fire them. So one media buyer might be overseeing 3, 4 or maybe even a dozen clients at once. 

There’s just no way they can be testing and scaling every day, which is what you need to be successful on MEDIA platforms right now. 

Ad agencies are facing three major challenges and they are passing that on to you.

  1. Attribution. When Apple released iOS 14 it broke Meta’s conversion tracking. Since then, agencies have been flying blind. This problem is solved, but not by agencies.

  2. Inability to keep talent. Agency turnover is more than 30% now. That means that the team you hired is rarely the same team that you’re going to have to fire in a few months. Maybe it’s a gen-z work ethic. Maybe it’s a pandemic hangover. Maybe, getting yelled at by clients isn’t a pleasant existence. Whatever the cause, the results are the same. Employees at agencies are unhappy because they are not being given the tools to help their clients succeed.

  3. Inability to keep up with changes on the ad platforms. This has to do with what I said before. The agency model requires that they spend as little time as possible working on your account.

AND IT’S ONLY GETTING WORSE. 

For us entrepreneurs, the result is terrible performance and millions in wasted ad dollars. Not to mention the confusion that business owners are now faced with when trying to vet and hire an agency. They all say the same thing on every pitch call. “Our proprietary data stack…”

After selling my first startup to a bigger ad agency and my second to Live Nation, working as the first Global CMO for Kabbalah Centre International and the head of new media for a notable presidential campaign in 2016, I realized that working with entrepreneurs brought me the most happiness.
